Jeanne Aucoin is the ancestral matriarch of the Acadian Aucoin/Girouard family. Jeanne was baptized on November 26, 1630 at the parish of Sainte-Marguerite at La Rochelle, Aunis (today Charente-Maritime), France. Her parents were Martin Aucoin and Barbe Minguet and her god-parents were Arnaud Gyon and Jeanne Riou.[1]
According to the 1767 depositions of their descendants, Jeanne came to Acadia with her husband François, but it's unclear if that means they were already married when they came.[2]
Around 1647 Jeanne married François Girouard. Between about 1648 and 1660, Jeanne gave birth to five children: Jacques (dit Jacob), Marie, Marie-Madeleine, Germain, and Anne (Anne Charlotte).[1]. They raised their family in Port Royal as they were found there in 1671[3], 1678[4], 1686[5] and1693.[6]
Jeanne Aucoin, widow of Girouer le Pere, passed away in Apr 1718, aged more than 90 years and was buried 18 April 1718 at Port Royal, Acadia.[7][8]
DNA. The Founding Mothers of Acadia Maternal DNA project is conducting ongoing research to verify their origins. Stephen White reports that Jeanne Aucoin had a Haplogroup H. Ongoing test results are also reported here. Five descendants have consistently reported H haplogroup, indicating European origins. Her sister Michelle (6 reports) also has H Haplogroup.
